| New version 1.5 versus Firefox... |
|
|
It appears as though the new lovely smileys are loading about 300 to 500 pixels down and to the right in Firefox. You might want to try it and see if it's a quick fix. The web developer tools in FF should make it a bit easier to diagnose than IE would. Just thought I'd let you know. Nice update though, by the way.

Actually, after looking a bit deeper, I can see that Firefox is a bit more broken with SWIRL than I thought. The AJAX JavaScript seems to be lagging up FF really bad. I haven’t done it personally, because I’m at work and haven’t really had the opportunity, but FF has a really nice JavaScript debugger (I think it might be an extension you have go and get manually, but it’s well worth it).

I see what you are saying about the smiley div showing up on the lower
right in firefox. But it seems like it is only when the page is
"edit" mode. If you put it in preview mode it will work
correctly. I'll figure out what is causing it and get it fixed in
the next version update.... Thanks for that find...

I have seen some of the script warnings you are talking about in
firefox. It appears that the ajax api that we are using throws
some internal exceptions when determining some attributes, but it
doesn't interfere with the ajax communication. If you view the
JavaScript Console in Firefox you will see a couple of warnings for
each "SendMsg" routine, but it doesn't stop the messages from sending
or being received.... I'll look into the api and see if there are
any ways to stop the warnings. Thanks for giving feedback on
this. We'll work on further evaluation of the Firefox in more
depth in the future.

Thanks for the followup. Is there anything you can suggest about having the chat running in FF with regards to the extreme (full application) lag that happens about every three seconds? Anything I might want to turn on/off, install/uninstall, etc...?

What version of FF are you running? We have been testing on
Firefox for quite some time and do not see any application lag at all
in our tests. When you say application lag, do you mean you have
several tabs open (one of which is the chatroom) and while you are
browsing other websites you see lag, or you see lag within the chat
messages, or what are you seeing? Please let me know as I would
like to troubleshoot this problem.

I apologize for not being concise. The lag I’m referring to is application lag, not network lag. With a chat open and other tabs (whether the tabs are loading data or not), the chat tab, and all other tabs in the active window will hang for ~2 seconds, then ~3 seconds later will hang again. This continues no matter if I’m typing, scrolling, highlighting, etc… I’m using the newly released Firefox 1.5 (non-beta).

Lance,
Do you have any firefox extensions installed (such as weather, etc.) that you have installed on your firefox instance? If so, do you mind letting me know what those extensions are so that I can install them (one at a time) on my firefox 1.5 testbox. I'd just like to see if there is any interference between our chatroom module's polling mechanism and any firefox extensions.
Thanks for continuing to help me track this down. I have installed firefox 1.5 on our testbox (default with no extensions), and still do not see any lag or application hanging, so I do believe that it must be something about the way your firefox install is configured.
Also, if you have time, you could send me your users.js/prefs.js file. Usually it is found in a folder similiar to (on winxp): "c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<somerandomstring>.default\prefs.js" I'd like to use the same prefs configuration and see if I see the same lag you mentioned. Maybe there is a particular configuration that "breaks" the chatroom polling mechanism?
Thanks again.

Sure. I'd love to do all I can. Today will be extremely busy for me, but I will try to get that to you as soon as I am able. Thanks for your continued concern.
